CACAO: The Divine Food …
Ancient Meso-American civilizations like the Olmecs, Aztecs, and Maya believed that cacao was a gift from the gods, a profound plant medicine designed to heal the physical, emotional, and spiritual body. The cacao tree, taken from a sacred mountain by the feathered-serpent god Quetzalcoatl, was revered as a bridge between heaven and earth. The Theobroma Cacao Tree, meaning “Food of the Gods,” continues to be a sacred symbol for indigenous people in the ancient Maya lands.
The Maya have consumed this “Food of the Gods” for thousands of years, creating a sacred (slightly bitter) beverage by grinding the cacao beans and mixing them with water. This ceremonial cacao was often enhanced with spices for additional healing properties, shared during various ceremonies and rituals to promote healing and connection within the community.
The plant spirit “Espiritu Cacao” was believed to transfer knowledge and healing from the gods to those who consumed the sacred beverage. Ceremonial cacao was used in rituals, weddings, baptisms, and even given to warriors before battle to enhance their life force. Today, this tradition continues, with medicine women using cacao to support physical health and emotional well-being, particularly in postpartum care and other healing practices.
