There are moments on this journey with cacao that stay forever etched into my heart.
Walking through the lands of Belize after the wildfires, the silence felt different. Entire areas that were once alive with lush jungle, flourishing cacao trees, birdsong, and ancestral cultivation had been reduced to ash. Families who had cared for these sacred lands for generations stood facing the unimaginable reality of rebuilding from nothing.
Many Indigenous Maya farmers lost not only cacao trees, but parts of their history, livelihood, and connection to the earth beneath their feet.
It was truly heartbreaking.
And yet, even in the midst of devastation, there was still hope waiting beneath the soil.
That hope became the seed for our Baby Cacao Tree Initiative.

My name is Sharon Fernie, and I am the founder of Herbal Cacao, where we share ceremonial cacao blends infused with herbs, spices, and medicinal mushrooms to support holistic wellness and heart-centered living.
Through Herbal Cacao, it has always been our mission to honour the sacred roots of cacao while supporting the Indigenous Maya communities who continue to protect this ancient wisdom. Here in the Herbal Cacao Journal, I love sharing stories that bridge ritual, healing, reciprocity, and the deeper journey behind every cup of cacao.
Because cacao is so much more than a drink. She is relationship. She is remembrance. She is community.
And the Baby Cacao Tree Initiative is one of the most meaningful expressions of that relationship we have ever created.
Why Replanting Cacao Trees Matters
Cacao is a slow teacher.
She asks for patience, care, and devotion.
A cacao tree can take at least five years before she fully matures and begins producing cacao pods. This means that when a family loses their trees to climate change, drought, or wildfires, the impact stretches far beyond a single season.
For many Indigenous Maya families in Guatemala and Belize, cacao farming is a lot more than simply agriculture. It is cultural preservation. It is ancestral knowledge passed from one generation to the next. It is a spiritual connection to the land.
Climate change is increasingly threatening these sacred ecosystems. Wildfires, changing rainfall patterns, and environmental instability are making it harder for farmers to sustain their cacao forests and protect the future of ceremonial cacao traditions.

This is why reforestation matters so deeply.
Every cacao tree planted becomes part of a long-term cycle of healing for the earth, for the communities, and for future generations.
At Herbal Cacao, reciprocity is not just a concept we speak about. It is something we strive to live through action.
What Is the Baby Cacao Tree Initiative?
Our Baby Cacao Tree Initiative allows our community to directly support the reforestation of Indigenous Maya lands through a simple but deeply meaningful act of reciprocity.
For every €4.50 contribution, one baby cacao tree is purchased directly from local farmers who have lovingly created cacao nurseries in Guatemala and Belize. During our visits to origin, we personally bring these young cacao trees to Indigenous Maya families who are rebuilding their lands after the devastating wildfires and effects of climate change.
This means your contribution directly funds the purchase of a living cacao plant, supporting not only the families replanting their land, but also the local farmers cultivating the nurseries themselves.
Together, this creates a beautiful cycle of community support, regeneration, and shared abundance.
These trees are planted alongside the Indigenous Maya families who grow our ceremonial cacao, helping restore ecosystems and preserve ancestral cacao traditions for future generations.

Each tree represents:
-
Restoration of cacao forests
-
Support for Indigenous Maya farming families
-
Regeneration of ecosystems impacted by climate change
-
Preservation of ancestral cacao traditions
-
Hope for future generations
This initiative was born after witnessing the heartbreaking aftermath of the Belize wildfires firsthand. Many farming families lost large parts of their land and cacao forests, leaving them needing to rebuild from scratch.
We knew we wanted to create something tangible, rooted in long-term healing rather than temporary relief.
Planting cacao trees felt like the most aligned expression of reciprocity.
A way for all of us who receive so much from cacao to also give back to her source.
Reciprocity Through Every Cup
One of the beautiful teachings cacao continues to share is that true nourishment flows both ways.
When we sit with ceremonial cacao, we receive so much. Presence. Clarity. Connection. Softening. Inspiration. Healing.
The Baby Cacao Tree Initiative is an invitation to complete that energetic exchange.
To give back to the lands and communities that make these sacred rituals possible.
At Herbal Cacao, ethical sourcing and community connection are foundational parts of our mission. We believe conscious business can become a bridge for collective healing when rooted in integrity, reciprocity, and genuine relationship.
Every tree planted becomes part of a living legacy.
One day, years from now, these baby cacao trees will offer shade, nourishment, abundance, and opportunity for future generations of Maya families.
A Sacred Long-Term Investment
In today’s world, we often seek quick results.
But cacao reminds us to think in generations.
Planting a cacao tree is an act of faith in the future.
It is choosing regeneration over extraction.
It is choosing stewardship over consumption.
It is choosing relationship over transaction.
When you contribute to planting a tree, you become part of something much bigger than a single purchase.
You become part of a global circle of people helping protect sacred land, Indigenous wisdom, biodiversity, and the future of ceremonial cacao itself.
A Simple Ritual of Giving Back
If you feel called, you can turn your cacao tree contribution into a small ritual of reciprocity.
Before making your contribution, take a quiet moment with your cacao.
Place your hands around your cup.
Close your eyes.
Reflect on everything cacao has brought into your life.
Then ask yourself:
“How can I give back to the source that nourishes me?”
From that space, plant your intention alongside the tree.
You may never physically stand beside that cacao tree as she grows, but your energy becomes part of her roots.
Birthday Reciprocity: Together We Plant Double
This year, for my birthday on the 11th of June, I wanted to create something even more meaningful with our community.
So throughout this special offering:
For every baby cacao tree purchased, I will personally gift another one.
You buy one tree, I gift one tree.
Together, we plant two new cacao trees for Indigenous Maya families.
What begins as one small act of giving becomes double the restoration, double the hope, and double the impact for the future of these sacred lands.
It feels incredibly special to celebrate another year of life by giving back to the communities and ecosystems that have given so much to all of us through cacao.
And I truly believe that when many small acts of love come together, they create profound change.
Closing Reflection
Every cup of cacao carries a story.
A story of earth, rain, hands, tradition, resilience, and heart.
The Baby Cacao Tree Initiative is an invitation to become part of that story in a deeper way.
Not simply as a consumer of cacao, but as a guardian of her future.
Together, we can help restore sacred lands, support Indigenous Maya communities, and plant seeds of hope that will continue growing for generations to come.
One tree.
One prayer.
One act of reciprocity at a time.
